Situated in picturesque Royal Park, the course is both attractive and challenging, only 3 kms from the city, with the honour of being possibly the only golf course with a tram and train line running through it. The Club has been the nursery for many golfers who went on to make a mark in the golfing world, including Peter Thomson (club champion at the age of 16, in 1945) who won the British Open 5 times, Gus Jackson and Mick Ryan. Peter and Mick were both included in the VGA's Victorian Team of the Century in 2002.

By 1991 the yearly membership for full members increased to $45 with a $20 joining fee, and $10 for juniors, with a $10 joining fee.

18 junior golfers visited from the US and were sponsored by VGL clubs. Royal Park sponsored a young 14 year old from Pennsylvania, who stayed with the Steer family.

Due to the redevelopment of the Zoo car park, major changes were made during 1994 and 1995 to the surrounding area including the closures of parts of Elliot Avenue and Poplar Road . This impacted on the course, as the 9th hole was shortened considerably (from 363 metres to 267 metres).

In 1997, the Melbourne City Council released the Royal Park Master Plan. The Council was to investigate the feasibility of building a footbridge over the railway line, and relocating certain holes to improve the course for players. It was also to develop a new clubhouse on Park Street.
