Situated in picturesque Royal Park, the course is both attractive and challenging, only 3 kms from the city, with the honour of being possibly the only golf course with a tram and train line running through it. The Club has been the nursery for many golfers who went on to make a mark in the golfing world, including Peter Thomson (club champion at the age of 16, in 1945) who won the British Open 5 times, Gus Jackson and Mick Ryan. Peter and Mick were both included in the VGA's Victorian Team of the Century in 2002.

Chris McManus

A tribute to Chris McManus

It is with great sadness we note the passing of Chris McManus, our Club Captain, after a long illness.

We remember Chris as a kind and courteous man who embraced the spirit of the great game of golf. His greatest contribution was his generous and gentle encouragement of junior golfers. He had the ability to inspire young people to the joys and disciplines of the game.

Chris was joint handicapper with his friend Max Miglionico for the last half of 1993. In 1994 and 1995 he became the Club Secretary, from 1997 to 1999 the Club President and from 2000 he was our Club Captain and Junior Liaison Officer. He was made a life member in 2003.

Three generations of the McManus family became members of our Club. Chris's father Gerry McManus became an honorary member who played on the course until well into his 90s. His son Tim was Manager of the Junior Pennant side in 2003.

If anyone would like to share their thoughts on Chris and his contribution to the Club, please email the Club and we will include them on this page.

Tributes from Club Members:

"My name is Gary Chappell and I have been with Royal Park Golf Club for the last 5years, but prior to that, I first joined the club in 1996 when I came over from Tasmania. I remember walking into the clubhouse to play my first game which was a stableford event and I met Chris McManus. The genuine friendliness and warmth of the man was the one thing that I remember well. The subsequent games that I was fortunate to play with Chris, he gave me quite a few tips that I can say, really improved my game to such a degree, that I do owe a lot of my success at Royal Park. The year that I won the George Ryan Trophy, I remember Chris saying that he remembered me when I first became a member in 1996 and when I resumed my membership in 2000, coming off a handicap of 27 and the way that he spoke was genuine. There was nothing false about Chris and I can never recall him being in a bad mood. He always had positive things to say about everyone. He always looked on the bright side of things and I am not alone in saying that his presence will be greatly missed." Gary Chappell, April 2005.

"The Winnall family and Lachlan in particular would like to pay tribute to the many hours of help and encouragement Chris gave to Lachlan and other junior members. Chris obviously had a liking and enjoyment to coach juniors and many of them owe a great debt of gratitude including Lachlan who presented real challenges. His memory will always be with us a man of integrity and kindness to all." Steve, Liz and Lachlan Winnall, April 2005.
